To achieve a BASIX Certificate, your design needs to meet the sustainability assessment in three areas:
- Water
- Energy
- Thermal Comfort
Once the design of your project has met the BASIX requirement and the fees have been paid, the certificate will be issued.
The BASIX software is flexible, allowing you many choices on how to achieve the required Water and Energy reductions.
Water
A minimum score of 40 in Water is required by BASIX for houses in Sydney. Some regional areas of NSW will have a lower minimum score required.
Water consumption and savings will be assessed on:-
- Landscape
- Fittings and fixtures
- Alternative water sources
- Pool and outdoor spas
- Central Systems and common areas
- Other energy uses
Generally by using showerheads & taps with at least a 3A rating, dual flush toilets and rainwater tanks for garden water/toilet flushing/laundry use will achieve the pass mark for a typical single dwelling design.
Generally the following will achieve the pass mark for a typical single dwelling design:
- Showerheads & taps with at least a 3A rating
- Dual flush toilets
- Rainwater tanks for garden water, toilet flushing and/or laundry use
Energy
A minimum score of 40 for energy is required by BASIX for single dwellings.
Energy consumption and savings will be assessed on:
- Hot water systems
- Heating and Cooling
- Ventilation
- Lighting
- Pools and spas
- Central systems
- Alternative energy sources
- Other energy uses
A typical single dwelling design will meet this target if it includes:
- Design features that make the most of natural heating, cooling and lighting
- Efficient hot water system
Thermal Comfort
This section is a simple PASS or FAIL.
A dwelling will get a pass if there is an adequate level of thermal performance for winter and summer appropriate to its climate.
This aims to ensure the Thermal comfort for a dwelling’s occupants, appropriate to the climate and season.
